Solar Panel Installation: the rules and the paperwork
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Kent?
Usually not. Roof-mounted panels on most houses are permitted development, provided they follow the national conditions. A listed building needs consent, panels in a conservation area must not go on a wall facing a road, and a council can remove the right street by street with an Article 4 direction, so check with your district council if your home is in one of those cases.

Who tells the electricity network about my new system?
Your installer does. In Kent the network operator is UK Power Networks, and every solar or battery system connected to a home has to be notified to it. Small systems are notified after they are switched on; larger ones need the network’s approval before connection, which is one of the things a survey checks.
Will I be paid for the electricity I export?
Yes, through the Smart Export Guarantee. Larger energy suppliers must offer an export tariff, and the rate is set by each supplier. To qualify, the system has to be installed by an MCS-certified installer, which we are.

Is there VAT on solar panels and home batteries?
No, not at the moment. Installing solar panels and batteries in a home is zero-rated for VAT from 1 May 2023 to 31 March 2027; from 1 April 2027 the rate is due to go back to the reduced rate.
